Who actually is James Blair?

James Blair is named as the Mississippi county deputy who was allegedly shot by gunman, Joaquin Steven Blackwell, after the suspect grabbed the cop’s gun while he was taken into custody Friday afternoon, the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to Mississippi authorities.

He was 77 years old at the time of death.

According to one of Blair’s neighbors,  the 77-year-old was still working as a deputy because he was raising his grandsons after their mother died.

He spent his whole life working in law enforcement. also doing stints as a paramedic and a school resource officer.

James Blair Shot Dead While Taking The Suspect To Mental Hospital

Blackwell was serving in the sheriff’s department’s custody, Regions 8 Health executive director Dave Van told WJTV.

Because Blackwell’s family was worried about his mental health, he was brought to the mental health facility in Mendenhall for an evaluation.

According to WAPT, deputy James Blair was taking Blackwell into custody after the evaluation when the suspect grabbed his gun escorted back to the patrol car.

The suspect escaped into the woods after fleeing. The deputy was airlifted to the hospital, where he was announced dead.

Joaquin Steven Blackwell is described as a black male, standing five feet eight inches tall and weighing 175 pounds. He has brown eyes and black hair.

He had been in mental health facility for an involuntary psychiatric evaluation. He was last seen wearing just white boxer shorts.

Blair was identified by the Jones County Sheriff’s Department in a Facebook post Friday, noting he was ‘Shot and killed in the line duty’.

It is still unknown Blackwell had been taken into custody and how long he had been at the mental health facility or in custody.
